Apple continues to dominate paid apps
Figures have shown that Apple continues to dominate the paid apps industry, by earning more than 54 per cent of the revenue for 2011, which suggests people that sell their mobile phones are opting for Apple products ahead of any other manufacturer.
Forecasts for this year predict that Apple will lose some of its share and fall to 50 per cent, with Android accounting for 25 per cent of the market and the rest of the industry taking the final 25 per cent.
According to director of apps research at Strategy Analytics Josh Martin, the introductions of tablets from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and a renewed push for Windows Phone ensure there will be an intense battle for third place in the market.
"Despite the importance of virtual goods, few platforms beyond the leaders have stepped up. Thus, Android and Apple may well dominate into the future,” he added.
Earlier this month, it was shown that iPad app downloads reached three billion in just a year-and-a-half, which is far more than the nearest rival Android with 440 million.
