Apple Celebrates Billionth App Store Download

The billionth application for the Apple iPhone 3G has been downloaded, it has emerged.

Having already announced a competition awarding the person who took the App Store to its landmark figure a number of prizes, the manufacturer has revealed 13-year-old Connor Mulcahey from Connecticut took the title.

The App Store user was downloading Bump - a software application which allows iPhone users to trade contact information - and is now the proud owner of a $10,000 iTunes gift card, as well as an iPod touch, Time Capsule and MacBook Pro.

Commenting on the milestone, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller said the App Store had proved to be a huge success since its launch.

"In nine months, the App Store has completely revolutionised the mobile industry and this is only the beginning," he concluded.

Bump is just one of more than 35,000 applications now available for the iPhone 3G - which could convince some to consider recycling mobile phones to get their hands on one.
