App sends data via 'digital birdsong'

An app that transmits data via a burst of "digital birdsong" aims to simplify the way in which users can share images and other files via their mobile phones.

The chip plays for a two-second long noise. When this is heard by other devices it triggers a download.

Animal Systems - a spin-off business from the University College London - developed the software.

It is free to use for consumers, however, companies will be charged a fee for add-on services.

The use of apps among smartphone users is continuing to rise and recent research from mobile app Localytics found that Apple users are 52 per cent more loyal to apps than Android customers.

"You can also use it as a device shifting mechanism. In the future you will be able chirp yourself a link to a map from your laptop," chief executive of Animal Systems Patrick Bergel told the BBC News.
