Android Smartphones Represent A Third Of Q4 Mobile Shipments

Android handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and LG Nexus 4 accounted for more than a third of global mobile shipments in the fourth quarter.

Devices sporting the Google operating system had a 69 per cent of the 216.5 million smartphone market, according to Canalys data.

Apple iPhone devices accounted for 11 per cent of total deliveries, showing that the American manufacturer continues to be a dominating force in the market.

It shipped 101 million handsets in the final quarter, following the release of the iPhone 5 and continuing popularity of the model's predecessors.

However, Samsung continues to be the leading gadget producer, sending out 210 million smartphones across the three-month period.

Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 releases made in 2012 remained popular in these latter months, while older handsets like the Galaxy S2 catered for lower-end markets.

Nokia maintained third place in the advanced device market after achieving 35 million units - success of Windows Phone 8 Lumia 920 and 820 devices could have driven sales.
