Android extends lead over Apple
Google's Android operating system was installed on 64.1 per cent of smartphones sold throughout the world in the second quarter of the year.
According to figures from industry analysts Gartner, only 43.4 per cent of the world's mobile phones in the second quarter of last year were Android.
The operating system has benefitted from the declines in Symbian and Research In Motion (RIM), as well as the slow uptake of Micorsoft's Windows Phone.
Apple's smartphone operating system iOS secured a market share of 18.8 per cent, which is barely different from the 18.2 per cent it enjoyed in the second quarter of last year.
Analyst at Gartner Anshul Gupta said no other smartphone vendors had a market share close to ten per cent, which shows the division of the top two.
"Samsung and Apple continued to dominate the smartphone market, together taking about half the market share, and widening the gap to other manufacturers," he continued.
