0800 to be free from mobiles
Ofcom has ruled that 0800, 0808 and 116 numbers will be free to call from all mobile phones in the UK.
Although these numbers are called "free numbers", previously calling them from smartphones would have racked up charges on the user's bill. However, the independent regulator has now ruled that calling your bank or utilities provider won't cost you a penny.
However, users will have to wait a little bit longer as the ruling won't come into effect officially until June 2015.
Ofcom said that "Freephone will mean free", adding that it will start a national campaign to tell consumers when the changes will come into action for their network provider.
The independent regulator also added that it will be cracking down on companies which use premium rate numbers. Businesses will now have to give out a 'service charge' when a person calls it to tell them exactly how much the call is costing.
