Sony plans attack on Apple with September releases
It's been a fantastic year for Sony already in 2014, with the Japanese manufacturer being one of a number of smartphone manufacturers who have managed to challenge the dominance of Samsung with phones critics have praised for their high build quality and fantastic specs.
And it seems that the company is now looking to build on the success it found with the robust and high-end Sony Xperia Z2 by releasing its new devices at a time when it will be a direct challenger to the other big player in the market - Apple.
Most people now believe that Apple will be releasing its new iPhone - believed to be the iPhone 6 - at an event on either September 19th or September 26th, and according to a new competition from Vodafone, this should coincide with the late September release of Sony's new handsets, the Sony Xperia Z3 and Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.
The reasoning behind this belief is (almost) simple. Vodafone in Germany is running a raffle that allows people who win to purchase smartphones from a specified list before the end of September - and the list contains both the new Sony devices.
If true, it will be the third time in less than a year that Sony has added a new flagship to its range. The Sony Xperia Z1 only got its first day on the shelves in October 2013, so the company is certainly not hanging around.
We expect to see both devices given their official launch at the IFA event at the start of September, as this is where Sony has looked to unveil the majority of its flagships in recent years, so it seems like the Vodafone rumour could just be true.
Early leaks have not shown there to have been much of an upgrade to the Sony Xperia Z3, with a slight processor upgrade as well as a 1080p display and a 7mm thick chassis, along with an upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat.
However, the Compact should have much more of an impact, with it packing an alleged 2.5GHz quad-core processor, a larger 4.5-inch display, 2GB of RAM and a 20.7-megapixel camera.
