Recycle Mobile: UK Cities Working To Increase Recycling

Oxford residents are now able to have batteries taken away and recycled along with their usual collection service thanks to a new recycling initiative.

Batteries will be taken on any collection day, as long as they are put on top of the bin in a clear plastic bag. According to the Oxford Mail, the council have collected over 100 bags of batteries within a week of the scheme's launch.

Old batteries leak harmful chemicals in the soil at landfills, and so recycling them is an important environmental move.

Sheffield council is also noticing the benefits of a recycling scheme. According to The Star, the introduction of a fortnightly bin collection has given rise to a 20 per cent increase in recycling.

Reducing the amount that general waste bins are collected seems to have encouraged residents to be more careful about what they are throwing away.

The council believes that this change to waste collection procedures will save £2.4 million.
