Recycle a mobile to drive down energy consumption
The winning suggestions in a Nokia competition could be followed by consumers who trade in an old mobile phone with Mazuma.
A host of ideas were put forward by mobile owners to the Finnish telecommunications firm, which had asked how users could best reduce the carbon footprint of their device.
Now, two have been selected as the winners - using a handset's navigation system to cut down on fuel consumption when driving and completing meetings via video messaging instead of powering a separate webcam.
With the technology required to carry out these steps available largely on smartphones, environmentalists currently in possession of an older model may wish to recycle it and put the cash towards a state-of-the-art device.
Nokia's commitment to the environment was illustrated earlier this week when it announced all of the handset it produces from now will be equipped with a feature to allow users to keep track of their carbon emissions.
