Over 3/4 Of Malware Infections Are On Android Phones

Android smartphones have grown in popularity in recent times, but it appears that they are also a target for hackers.

A report by F-Secure revealed that threats to this operating system accounted for 79 per cent of 301 specific malware issues in 2012.

Furthermore, there were 96 new families of malware on Android which surfaced in 2012 alone.

The report was also cheekily retweeted by Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller, who linked to it and said "Be safe out there".

"The rise of Android malware can be largely attributed to the operating system's increasing foothold in the mobile market. Android's market share has risen to 68.8 per cent in 2012, compared to 49.2 per cent in 20112. On the threat side, its share rose to 79 per cent in 2012 from 66.7 per cent in 2011," the F-Secure said.

It added that Symbian was suffering the opposite fate, as its market share dropped off last year.
