O2 mobile phone customers 'can sign up to anti-poverty campaign by text'
Cashing in an old mobile phone to pick up the new Apple iPhone 4 on O2 could allow people to take part in a new charitable campaign.
The 1GOAL initiative, backed by football organisation Fifa, aims to help get the 72 million children currently living below the poverty line and without education out of such circumstances by 2015.
O2 customers can help the cause by texting 1GOAL to 20102, which will count towards a petition the scheme is running, with which it hopes to get as many signatures as those young people in poverty.
Arsenal star Thomas Vermaelen, who has joined O2 in support the project, said: "The 1GOAL campaign is a really great cause and one that we at Arsenal are excited to support. Universal education should be a reality for all, not something that 72 million children are deprived of."
Telefonica O2 UK is a leading communications company for consumers and businesses in the UK, with 21.4 million mobile customers and over 600,000 fixed broadband customers as of 31 March 2010.
