New Mobile For Christmas? Recycle Your Old One!

People would do well to consider their environmental impact during the holiday season and recycle gadgets such as old mobile phones rather than simply tossing them in the bin.

This is the opinion of Jane Hutchinson, recycling assistant at Nottinghamshire's Kimberley Depot, who commented to the Eastwood Advertiser that when people receive new items for Christmas, they should think carefully about where their used mobile phones end up.

She suggested that they should consider recycling old electrical items - in addition to mobiles, these can include hair dryers and games consoles - to cut down on the amount of waste they produce.

The newspaper claimed that households in the UK throw away some 15 per cent more waste during the Christmas period than they do at other times of the year.

QSR magazine reported last week that Shawn Kilmurray of Rock the Earth claims that every mobile phone that has not been disposed of in the correct way has the potential to contaminate up to 40,000 gallons of drinking water.
