More than 1.2bn smartphones and tablets to be bought in 2013
The popularity of smartphones and tablets is continuing to explode, with Gartner predicting that more than 1.2 billion will be sold next year.
This builds on a figure of 821 million for 2012, with smart products accounting for 70 per cent of total devices purchased during this calendar year.
Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, said: "For most businesses smartphones and tablets will not entirely replace PCs, but the ubiquity of smartphones and the increasing popularity of tablets are changing the way businesses look at their device strategies and the way consumers embrace devices."
She went on to say that by 2016 two-thirds of the mobile workforce will own a smartphone, while 40 per cent will be mobile.
Next year's sales could be boosted if smartphone giants like Apple and Samsung release new versions of their iPhone and Galaxy respectively.
The iPhone 6 might be on the cards, while there are also rumours that a Galaxy S4 is in the pipeline.
