Mobile Phone Owners Want Gadgets To Be Environmentally Friendly

More than two-in-five Brits are hoping that Santa delivers gadgets like mobile phones this Christmas, but many are concerned about the potential environmental damage involved in the manufacturing process.

Over half of consumers think that companies like Apple, Samsung and Nokia should take measures to ensure production is as green as possible, according to Friends of the Earth.

In 2011, the iPhone creator estimates that it was responsible for releasing 23.1 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

The American technology giant does work to improve energy efficiency by using renewable sources, packaging sensibly and removing toxic substances wherever possible.

However, owners can take measures to ensure that harmful chemicals from their old mobile phone are not released into the atmosphere and avoid wasting precious landfill space by recycling.

Disposing of these devices responsibly also allows valuable components to be reused, meaning that less energy is wasted creating more new products.
