'Local schools benefit' from recycling used mobile phones
Devon residents who choose to recycle used mobilephones could help improve facilities at schools in the area.
Recycle Week has been running since June 21st and those who opt to dispose of their old handsets in this way will receive reward tokens that schools can collect in a bid to win garden centre vouchers, the Mid Devon Star reports.
Alternatively, owners of mobile phones that are no longer being used could send them to a company such as Mazuma, which offers cash for discarded handsets.
"Everyone knows that recycling old electrical items is far better than them ending up in landfill," councillor Gordon Hook was quoted by the newspaper as saying.
Recycling used mobile phones will help "keep Devon greener", he added.
According to data from Recycle Now, just 1.3 kg of small electrical goods was sent for recycling for every 7 kg - the average amount per person - that was purchased in 2009.
