Handset Sales Rise May Lead To More Mobile Recycling

More people could be recycling mobile phones as Christmas approaches, if Gartner predictions relating to new handsets are accurate.

The market research organisation said it expects to see sales of new models rise towards the end of the year.

Research director Carolina Milanesi explained: "Many devices will reach the market in time for Christmas and mobile carriers will run incentives for consumers during the holidays."

However, it is not just seasonal trends that are likely to drive the increase in the number of people buying new handsets and potentially having to sell mobilephones they no longer require.

Gartner also expects to see sales figures rise in the fourth quarter of 2009 when compared with the same period of the previous year.

The analyst recently noted that the mobile phone industry has weathered the financial turbulence better than it had anticipated.

As a result, the market has seen two quarters of growth in the middle of 2009, compared with Gartner's earlier predictions sales would drop.
