Handset disposal 'the biggest green mobile issue'
Disposal of handsets has been cited as probably the biggest of the three major environmental issues related to mobile phones.
Cliff Kuang of Wired Magazine stated that there is such a thing as a green gadget with three determining criteria - whether it can be recycled, how many toxic materials it contains and how energy efficient it is.
Of these, recycling would appear to be the most important aspect, with Mr Kuang claiming that "disposal is arguably the most pressing issue".
He referred specifically to Nokia as one mobile phone manufacturer that encourages recycling and claimed that there are third-party recyclers out there that will pay consumers for their devices and offer free postage so that people can send their handsets in.
Mazuma Mobile is one of the leading companies operating in this market. It is willing to pay up to £105 for a Nokia N95 and £60 for a Samsung Tocco.
