First Green Mobile Award presented at MWC
SMART Communications has been celebrated for its environmentally-friendly approach to mobile communications by winning the inaugural Green Mobile Award at the 2009 World Mobile Congress in Barcelona.
The Philippines-based communications firm was recognised for its achievements in delivering alternative power for cell sites.
So far, the programme has delivered 68 cell sites around the Philippines, of which 41 are run by wind generators and 27 harness both wind and solar energy.
Martin Sonnenschein, a partner at AT Kearney, which sponsored the award, said SMART had understood the benefits of stimulating demand for green mobile phone products, which he said remained relatively low.
He suggested that the company's efforts to boost interest in green mobile products was impressive and should be followed by others in the industry.
The Mobile World Congress recently rewarded mobile manufacturer Nokia for its eco-friendly efforts, giving it the award for Outstanding Environmental Contribution by communications body and conference host GSMA.
