Erewash Borough Council 'urging people' to recycle mobile phones
People in the UK should think twice before sending gadgets such as mobile phones to landfill, according to a local council.
Mobiles and other electronic devices are popular gifts during the month of December and Erewash Borough Council noted that it may be worth considering ways of disposing of old models that do not involve putting them in the bin.
"We need to drastically reduce the amount of rubbish that we send to landfill," John Allsop, county council cabinet minister for recycling, told the Ilkeston Advertiser.
CNet editor Brian Cooley wrote earlier this week that people who plan to recycle mobilephones should first take steps to clear their private data off the devices.
He advised backing up contact details and transferring this information to the new mobile handset before doing a full permanent wipe of private information from their phone.
Mobiles should be clear of all personal data - such as text messages - before they are sent off to be recycled, he added.
