Could mobile phone recycling help Britain improve green image?
The UK is one of Europe's worst when it comes to using renewable energy, but recycling old mobiles may be one method that could improve the green outlook.
Recent research by Eurostat showed the country to have one of the lowest shares of renewable power in 2008 across the continent.
This has led one expert from TheRenewableEnergyCentre.co.uk to label the nation's results "embarrassing".
"The UK has fallen far behind Europe and countries such as Germany, in the race to embrace renewable energy and sustainable ways of living," the spokeswoman noted.
But by reusing mobile phones - and receiving cash for them in the process - Britons could help their country turn around its environmental fortunes.
Companies such as Mazuma can help by disposing of handsets in a clean and safe way that offers minimal impact on the environment.
Eurostat's results showed Europe as a whole is improving its performance, with 10.3 per cent of energy coming from sustainable sources in 2008, up from 9.7 per cent the previous year.
