City Dwellers Greener Than You Think

A new study has found that busy city folk may not be as environmentally-unfriendly as predicted.

The survey, conducted by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), looked at emissions levels across Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America.

Published in the April issue of Environment and Urbanization, it was found the level of CO2 being put out in the cities covered was often significantly lower than the national averages.

In the piece, author and IIED spokesman David Dodman explains such cities are often not as guilty of causing climate change and suggests they divert attention from the real threat.

"What is clear is that most emissions come from the world's wealthier nations," he states. "The real climate-change culprits are not the cities themselves but the high consumption lifestyles of people living across these [countries]."

One way to help cut carbon emissions is to recycle mobilephones, computers and other electrical items that are no longer in use.
