Brits say bigger is better for smartphone screens
The age of the phablet may soon be upon us at last, after a new survey found that a third of British people would now prefer to own one of these larger devices rather than a smaller smartphone.
The study, conducted by Accenture, found 57 per cent of global users are planning to buy a smartphone this year, with 48 per cent of these saying that they would be likely to go for the larger screen offered by a phablet rather than a traditional smartphone.
It will be music to the ears of Korean manufacturer Samsung, which is believed to be on the cusp of releasing its latest phablet device, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which will come with a mammoth 5.7-inch display.
Breaking down the figures a little further, Accenture's study found that 37 per cent of British people who are planning on making a purchase of a smartphone this year will be going with the mantra that bigger is better and choosing a phablet over a smartphone.
“The phablet screen size is hitting a sweet spot for a large percentage of consumers wanting more digitally connected lifestyles,” said David Sovie, managing director of Accenture's communications, media and technology group.
“To capitalise on this, consumer technology companies should consider adjusting their digital strategies, research and development investments, product roadmaps and supply chains to focus more on phablet business opportunities and less so, in some cases, on the conventional smartphone market.”
In addition to the people looking to buy a tablet, 44 per cent of respondents said they are eager to get their hands on a tablet computer this year, with 72 per cent likely to get a full-sized device over a smaller variant.
Worldwide, it seems that Turkish people are most open to the idea of the phablet, with some 64 per cent of smartphone buyers saying these are their devices of choice.
In contrast, only 30 per cent of those in the Netherlands said the same, making them the least receptive to these larger handsets.
