Apple iPhone shoppers and mobile recycling
People recycling old mobiles to buy an iPhone may welcome calls from an MP urging Britons to be more responsible when it comes to disposing of items that are no longer required.
Environment secretary Hilary Benn issued this plea at a recent summit of waste industry representatives and council officials.
He suggested people need to take responsibility for the impact they are having on the planet.
Mr Benn asked: "Why do we send valuable items like aluminium and food waste to landfill when we can turn them into new cans and renewable energy?"
He concluded: "We must now work together to build a zero-waste nation."
Meanwhile, John Denham, secretary of state for communities and local government described failing to reuse materials wherever possible as "missing a major opportunity".
People keen to recycle an old mobile in order to do their bit for the planet may find replacing it with a model from LG can help them cut their CO2 emissions even further.
