HoL Calls For Action Over Mobile Phone Roaming Charges

Mobile phone data roaming charges are "unacceptably high" and in some cases are costing Britons hundreds of pounds in bills every month, it has been claimed.

Proposals are set to be voted on by members of the EU to try and put a cap on the amount of money that people can spend on their contract mobile phones while abroad on holiday.

The House of Lords' EU sub-committee on the Internal Market, Energy and Transport wrote to minister for culture, communications & creative industries Ed Vaizey yesterday (March 13th) to outline its views on the EU roaming charges proposals.

Chairman of the committee Baroness O'Cathain said for too long consumers have been left in the dark about roaming charges, which has often led to "bill shock" at the end of holidays.

"The industry will not reduce its prices voluntarily, and the EU needs to keep up its system of price caps in order to drive costs down," the Baroness added.
