BA Is First In Europe To Allow Phones On Planes

Passengers flying with British Airways (BA) will be able to use their mobile phones and other gadgets throughout an entire flight for the first time.

Although calls, texts and emails are still banned, passengers will be allowed to keep their handsets on even during takeoff and landing provided they keep them on ‘flight mode’.

This means that people will be able to use their phones to watch films or listen to music during their flight.

The policy complies with all existing safety laws, and BA has demonstrated this to the Civil Aviation Authority. The European Aviation Safety Agency said last month that airlines like BA could relax the rules on using phones and other devices mid-flight at their own discretion.

Capt Ian Pringle, BA's flight training manager, said: “The easing of restrictions will provide an average of 30 minutes additional personal screen time.”
