Ensuring unwanted items are able to be reused in one way or another is one of the most important ways to protect the planet, it has been advised.

In an article that may inspire those looking to recycle mobilephones, Jill Kelley of the Dayton Daily News lists 50 ways in which households can cut their carbon emissions - and save some money at the same time.

She states that recycling is "the mother of all nature-savers" and adds that there is no reason why such green initiatives should not go hand in hand with reducing your spending.

Turning off lights and electricals that are not in use, avoiding bottled water, donating unwanted items to charity and replacing older, less-efficient electronics are all cited as things to consider.
