Windows Phone 8: Microsoft unveils new mobile phone OS
Microsoft unveiled its new Windows Phone 8 (WP8) operating system at an event in San Francisco on October 29th.
The software will power mobile phones which should be released imminently, such as the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X.
One of the main features is Live Apps. This allows users to see social media updates or the latest news headlines without opening any applications.
Customers will also be able to personalise their device to suit them, with the ability to change tile colours and put favourite people and tools on the home screen.
Much in the same way that Apple iPhone owners access the App Store and those with Android gadgets go to Google Play, those with WP8 smartphones can go to the Windows Store to browse thousands of applications such as Facebook and Angry Birds.
Parents will also love the Kid's Corner feature, which puts the handset into a mode that allows children to play games without the owner having to worry about unauthorised purchases or deleted text messages.
