Support ends for Windows 8 phone next year
Microsoft has announced that all updates for its Windows 8 Phone operating system will stop in July 2014, just 16 months from now.
Only released in October last year, Microsoft has said by July it will be past its lifecycle start dates. This may cause customers to buy a new mobile phone that will have support for longer than 18 months. Updates are available for the operating system for “a period of 18 months” after the start date. This means customers taking out a two-year contract with the company could find that their mobile phone is no longer supported before their contract has ended.
Customers of Microsoft should be accustomed to this style of approach as people who bought the Windows Phone 7.5 OS couldn’t upgrade their devices to Windows Phone 8.
Microsoft has yet to confirm details of the next Windows Phone version so it is hard to establish whether or not Windows Phone 8 will be able to update to the currently named “code-named Blue” which is due to arrive before the end of the year.
