Samsung 'planning Windows RT tablet for October release'
Samsung is set to launch a tablet running a new version of Windows designed to run on ARM technology later this year.
According to Bloomberg, the unannounced device will run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the news source stated the tablet is likely to be released in October, along with devices from other manufacturers that run on Windows RT.
RT has been designed by Microsoft to run on touchscreen handsets that draw less power than laptops or desktop computers, which traditionally run on x86 processors.
Microsoft hopes the operating system will be a credible competitor to Apple's iPad, the market leader that features chips based on ARM technology.
Representatives from Microsoft and ARM declined to comment when contacted by Bloomberg, as did Samsung spokesman Nam Ki Yung.
Samsung, the current leader of the global mobile phone market, will be hoping the rumoured new device can repeat the success of the Galaxy S3, its latest Android-powered smartphone.
This device, according to HMC Investment Securities, is expected to sell around 18 million units in the third quarter of 2012.
