Google renames online storefront for music and other services
The Android Market is set to be renamed by Google as they try and separate the mobile phone applications side of the firm with its storefront for music, books and digital goods.
It is hoped that consumers will be more aware of the other services that Google provides rather than just the apps programmed for smartphones and tablets based on the Android operating system.
As of yesterday (March 6th) the store will be known as Google Play Store and the apps store will remain as a separate entity.
Engineering director for Android Digital Content Chris Yerga told Reuters that too many people just associate Android with apps.
This could be because Android is the world's number one smartphone operating system that is used in smart mobile phones sold by manufacturers including Samsung and HTC.
"Maybe that person who is an avid book reader or music purchaser now becomes aware of 'Hey I can also get videos here, I can get games here,'" he added.
