BlackBerry smartphones become Wi-Fi 'hotspots'
Research in Motion (RIM) has announced that BlackBerry smartphones have finally become Wi-Fi hotspots. The launch of the BlackBerry 7.1 allows customers to turn their phones into Wi-Fi beacons, as well as being able to use near-field communication functionality.
The Android Froyo2.2, iOS 4.3 and Microsoft's Mango 7.5 all have the capabilities of becoming Wi-Fi hotspots and this has been seen a key piece of the jigsaw for BlackBerry to catch up with its rivals.
Chief executive officer of RIM Mike Lazaridis told the Consumer Electronics Show that the range of software updates announced by the company aim to enhance the mobile experience for people.
Talking of the 7.1 update Mr Lazaridis added: "[It allows people to] turn their BlackBerry smartphone into a mobile hotspot that can be shared by up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices, including laptops and tablets."
A recent study conducted by Arieso suggested that people are continuing to sell their mobile phones in order to get their hands on smartphones.
