Apple Passbook app may infringe patents
The Apple Passbook app may infringe on patents held by another company, which could leave the iPhone developer in another courtroom.
Apple has already been involved in patent battles with mobile phone manufacturers Motorola and Samsung, as the companies accuse one another of using protected intellectual property in their products.
Now, poker and restaurant software developer Ameranth claims that the new Passbook application infringes on their patents.
Passbook is a tool which was released on the latest Apple operating system, iOS 6.
The application, which allows users to store electronic boarding passes and store royalty cards, is automatically installed to devices using this firmware.
The company has filed the suit because it believes that the way Passbook handles data violates patents they own.
Patent number 6,384,850, named "Information management and synchronous communications system with menu generation", is one which Ameranth believes Apple is aware of infringing.
The software creator is seeking three-times the damages caused in compensation, as violations were apparently 'wilful'.
