Experts highlight mobile recycling
In conjunction with the start of Recycle Week, which kicks off today (June 22nd) across the UK, consumers looking to recycle mobilephones are being encouraged to do so for a number of reasons.
The charitable applications of the practice were outlined on the Cambridge News website, where Chris Elliott drew attention to a campaign that was using the money from the sale of unwanted handsets to save endangered gorillas in Africa.
Charlotte Whitwell, fundraising officer for conservation group Fauna & Flora International, told the publication it was essential for people to "dig around and send their old phones in".
"With an estimated 90 million phones lying unused in offices, drawers, cupboards and landfills across the UK alone, the potential is huge," she added.
Elsewhere, the Shields Gazette said council members in South Tyneside were pointing out the fact that such practices should be encouraged on a more permanent basis.
