A new rumour indicates that Microsoft is trying to compete with its mobile phone rivals by being the latest manufacturer to dabble in fingerprint technology.
According to WindowsPhoneLovers, which has been analysing the latest Windows Phone 8.1 SDK, the new update could bring the tech to users.
The code reads: "To allow the app to access your private key, scan an enrolled finger on the fingerprint scanner."
This could mean Microsoft is taking a leaf out of Apple's book and planning on implementing a physical fingerprint scanner into its recently acquired Nokia devices, or onscreen reading. The next update will be the first from the Windows giant since it bought out the Finnish manufacturer, so we could see more focus on handset abilities.
We've seen recent moves from Microsoft, including cutting its licence fees, to try and get more smartphones running its operating system – indicating that the next software release could be a big deal for the American tech giant.
