Recycling your phone for a new model presents a wide range of choices – but those considering a Windows-based handset might want to hear what one critic thinks of the software.

Pete Cunningham is a senior analyst at Canalys and said while the tool has improved, it has done so in an evolutionary way – rather than setting a new trend.

His comments follow the unveiling by Microsoft earlier this week of a new line of Windows phones and related applications store.

Windows Mobile 6.5 betters its predecessor with a higher quality browser, he added.

But generally, it does not compare with the usability of the Apple iPhone.

"The iPhone obviously allows you to download applications and Windows Mobile has been behind the curve in this sense," Mr Cunningham remarked.

Canalys published research in August that claimed Windows Mobile to be the biggest loser in the operating system market during the second quarter of 2009.
