As we head into December, it is time to reminisce back over the year and remember the highlights in the world of the smartphone.
Ahead of next week’s Stuff Gadget Awards 2014, the tech-loving site has announced what the eight best smartphones of the past year have been. While we will have to wait to find out which device is awarded the number one spot, here are the nominees:
Apple iPhone 6
Well, of course this was going to be up there at the top! We haven’t seen so much hype and build to a smartphone like the one that took place in the year leading up to its release in September.
Apple offered us a refreshed update of their flagship device, which came with a larger screen, new design, the iOS 8 system and a choice in size.
While the rumours of a sapphire screen turned out to be just, well, rumours, that didn’t matter as the world went Apple-crazy in 2014, and we have no doubt that this is one of the top contenders.
The LG G3 had a lot to live up to after its predecessor, the LG G2, was named Gadget of the Year in 2013, and LG definitely delivered!
Android fans were treated to a large 5.5-inch 2K screen, and a superb camera which offered laser auto focus. The device’s removable battery and expandable memory certainly helped to cement it as one of this year’s greats.
HTC One (M8)
The HTC One (M8) was very well received when it was released earlier this year, and it’s no surprise really. The flagship phone boasted a fantastic, metallic design making it one of the sleekest devices of the year for sure.
Add to that the fact that it features HTC Sense 6.0 as well as front-facing speakers which are very powerful, and you are in for a winner!
The OnePlus One was undoubtedly one of the best bargain smartphones of the year. Costing only £230, it offers a 5.5-inch full HD screen as well as 3GB of RAM.
Add into the mix its 13MP camera, this really is a great smartphone which is standing its ground against the higher priced offerings.
Motorola Moto X
Motorola really outdid itself this year with the Moto X and it’s beautiful design, in which you can even opt for a dark wooden casing, really is like no other.
The fact that you can customise the handset is undoubtedly one of its unique selling points and its sensors which are always on only add to its greatness. The features include a very fast battery charge as well as face detection and a voice-activated search power. What’s not to love?
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Along with Apple, Samsung is one of the top dogs to watch when it comes to smartphones and its Galaxy Note 4 has made the cut for this year’s nominations.
The Galaxy Note 4 seemed to be one of the more premium devices of the year with its all-metal band. Its screen is stunning as well and its specs are incredible too, with a powerful 16MP camera as well as a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display.
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
With waterproof features and a fantastic camera that features a number of creative apps, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact was one of the greatest releases of the year.
It contains the same processor and RAM as the Xperia Z3 as well as a great battery, so don’t be surprised if this takes the top prize next week!
Motorola Moto G 4G
Motorola has two entries this year, suggesting just how great a year the company has had! While the Moto 4 4G may be small, it certainly makes up for it in what it can do.
Not only does it include the Android 5.0 Lollipop, its back is interchangeable so you can really make it your own!
