People that looked to try and recycle their mobile phones in order to get their hands on a new device were increasingly looking towards tablets in 2011, an expert has claimed.

Head of marketing for Mark Riley said 2011 was the year of the tablet and as more come into the market in the next few months the devices will become even more popular.

Mr Riley said the iPad 2 has had a massive impact on the market, while Android’s offering[s] to compete with the Apple device are becoming increasingly popular, although this could be impacted on by the release of the Kindle Fire.

The expert also suggested that the Windows-powered Lumia series of devices could be make serious inroads into the smartphone market, thus improving the position of ailing Finnish firm Nokia.

Annual predictions for the technology industry given by Deloitte recently predicted that an increasing number of people are going to own more than one tablet in the next 12 months.
