Worldwide media tablet shipments rose by 56.1 per cent on a sequential basis in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 28.2 million units, research has shown.
The International Data Corporation Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker found that shipments increase by 155 per cent when compared with the fourth quarter of 2010.
With the unveiling of the new iPad seen last week and the launch of other Android-based products coming later in the year it is also expected that 2012 forecasts will now be increased such is the demand of the new device.
Research director of Mobile Connected Devices Tom Mainelli said as the sole vendor of iOS products, Apple will remain dominant in terms of worldwide shipments of the devices.
"However, the sheer number of vendors shipping low-priced, Android-based tablets means that Google's OS will overtake Apple's in terms of worldwide market share by 2015," he continued.
