People may wish to consider recycling their old mobile and opt for a new handset that functions as a type of "pocket computer".

James Atkinson, editor of Mobile magazine, commented that mobiles have become a must-have item and noted that gadgets such as the BlackBerry are helping people multi-task.

He pointed out that such phone are more integrated than ever before and it is easy to swap between on and offline functions, including personal organisers and social networking sites.

"We are all basically walking around with little computers now," he said.

Figures published by Gartner this week indicated that the price of smartphones and enhanced handsets may decline by three per cent in the next year – good news for people looking to use the cash from recycling their old mobile to trade up.

It is thought that by the end of the year, sales of smartphones will make up some 14 per cent of the entire mobile market.
