Selling an old mobile phone could provide consumers with cash to put towards a new handset with Wi-Fi and therefore on the move internet access.
Recent findings from company InSites Consulting suggested that 72 per cent of people who use the internet make use of at least one social networking site. This translates to 940 million users around the world.
Natasha Stokes, editor of Mobile Choice, suggested that she believes an increasing number of smartphones are getting Wi-Fi because mobile internet use is spiking.
"It is an extremely useful feature that would allow you to, for example, browse the net, check email, make VoIP calls and download apps without using the 3G network, therefore not incurring data charges," she said.
According to recent research from Gartner, in 2009 smartphone sales increased to 172.4 million units, a 23.8 per cent increase from the previous year.
