Selling a mobile phone in order to improve access to gambling websites could be one reason for making a switch of handset.
Juniper Research has analysed results from leading betting companies and suggested the "tipping point" has now been reached in terms of mobile gaming.
It noted Ladbrokes enjoyed growth of 786 per cent in its revenue from phone-based betting over the last year, while William Hill's takings were up by 250 per cent.
Dr Windsor Holden, author of a report for the research organisation, said that while user figures may still be relatively small, the industry is undoubtedly booming.
He recently spoke to Claire Berry from Ladbrokes for the latest Mobile Gambling report and she stated: "We expect to see between a quarter and a third of our online sports betting going through mobile within the next two and a half to three years."
One device people could use to visit betting websites is the HTC Wildfire S, which Three has just announced it will be stocking.
