It may be that older consumers in the UK have the most to gain from selling mobile phones and investing in the latest technology.
As this year's Silver Surfers' Day – held to recognise the importance of getting over-55s online – takes place, the Communications Consumer Panel's acting chair Bob Warner said it is more important than ever to persuade older people to use the web.
He noted that new research compiled by Digital Unite found about 80 per cent of individuals aged over 55 believe gaining access to the internet has improved their lives.
"Digital participation across our communities, with the wealth of social and economic advantages it brings, is vital to the future wellbeing of the UK," the expert stated.
Mr Warner went on to suggest that Silver Surfers' Day is all about encouraging people to take the first step towards a presence online – something that could be achieved via a new mobile phone.
Clodagh Murphy, director of Eclipse Internet, recently said access to the net is even more important in the business world.
