Barnes & Noble has released a free NOOK application for Apple iOS and Android mobile devices in the UK.
Owners of mobile phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 will therefore be able to download the tool either from Google Play or the App Store.
Consumers who already own a NOOK e-reader will be able to sync their smartphone with their device library, allowing them to pick up where they left off in the latest novel.
All users can download from the virtual store, which offers access to over 2.5 million books as well as magazines and newspapers.
One of the main benefits of e-reading is the ability to digitally adapt text size, highlight important or interesting passages, and quickly look up definitions using an in-built dictionary.
Those who own the Amazon e-book device, the Kindle, can also download an associated app to their iOS, Android or Windows Phone handset.
