Gartner published its latest report looking at the combined market share of the industry and found the Finnish company to have retained a 36.8 per cent portion of the sector during the second quarter of 2009.
Following Nokia, the first of two South Korean companies made an appearance as it was announced Samsung had held the second spot with 19.3 per cent, followed by its neighbour LG – which had 10.7 per cent of sales in the period.
In fourth place, Motorola had a 5.6 per cent market share and Sony Ericsson managed to hold a 4.7 per cent portion of the global mobile sector.
According to Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner, Nokia’s success had not been based on its flagship devices – like the recently-launched N97 – but instead lay with cheaper handsets.
