Consumer electronics giant Apple has announced the release of a new hardback book chronicling 20 years of the company’s design work.
Some 450 photographs of past and current Apple products are included in the tome, which is titled Designed by Apple in California and covers products from 1998’s iMac to 2015’s Apple Pencil.
The company has a reputation for cutting edge design work and many of its products – particularly the Apple II and the original iPod mp3 player – have helped to cement the company’s reputation as an innovator in this field.
Indeed, the book also documents the materials and techniques used by Apple’s design team over the course of two decades of innovation.
Photographer Andrew Zuckerman shot the book’s 450 images in a deliberately spare style in keeping with the minimalism of the company’s design ethos.
All of the photographed products are the result of a profoundly close collaboration between many different groups and they serve to illustrate Apple’s design process, in addition to the finished products themselves.
The book is dedicated to the memory of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and Jony Ive, chief design officer of the firm, explained that Mr Jobs’s motivation to make something that would benefit humanity remains both the ideal and goal of the company in the future.
“This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and why they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines,” he commented.
Mr Ive also wrote the foreword to the book, in which he emphasised the fact that the volume is about design, not the team that worked on the products, the creative process that led to the finished looks or the product development.
As such, it is hoped to stand as an objective representation of the Apple designs that describes how the products are worked on and the values they represent, as well as the preoccupations and goals of the team behind them.
“We strive, with varying degrees of success, to define objects that appear effortless. Objects that appear so simple, coherent and inevitable that there could be no rational alternative,” Mr Ive stated.
Designed by Apple in California is available in two sizes – a small 10.20-inch by 12.75-inch version priced at £169 and a larger edition measuring 13-inches by 16.25-inches priced at £249.
