Charlo Carabott, a spokesperson for the group, said the large number of handset upgrades occurring on a regular basis means care needs to be taken with the old gadgets that are potentially left in drawers or sent to landfill.
"Throwing old phones away might seem like an easy option, but this has a serious consequence on the environment as mobile phones and their batteries contain toxic waste material," he warned.
Mr Carabott continued by saying that instead, a better option is to get cash for used phones that can be used better elsewhere.
Earlier this month, the Waste and Resources Action Programme called for more action on how materials are utilised to help fight climate.
