Professor Richard Wiseman is hoping thousands of people will take part in an experiment designed to try and manipulate dreams.
Participants will be able to download a specifically designed mobile phone app that has the potential to turn their handset into a dream factory.
By being placed in the bed, the phone will be able to detect when a sleeper is not moving, which is a signifier for the onset of dreaming.
It will then play a carefully crafted “soundscape” designed to try and evoke pleasant and peaceful scenes such as walking in woods.
As many as 10,000 people are expected to take part in the mass-participation study, which is being launched at the Edinburgh International Science Festival.
”Getting a good night’s sleep and having pleasant dreams boosts people’s productivity, and is essential for their psychological and physical well being. Despite this, we know very little about how to influence dreams,” professor Wiseman from the University of Hertfordshire added.
