Downloading full music tracks on to mobile phones looks set to take off over the next few years, with Juniper Research predicting that revenues from this sector could reach $14.6 billion (£10.1 million) by 2013.
According to the market analyst, the amount of money that will be generated by this segment will be more than enough to make up for a predicted fall in revenue from ringtones.
The participation of major record labels is expected to be one of the driving forces behind the new trend along with the upsurge in user-generated content being created on the mobile web.
Other factors are improved mobile handset capabilities and the falling cost of data downloads.
Also increasing in line with music downloads will be the number of people able to watch television via their mobile phones, Juniper suggested.
It anticipates that 330 million people will have access to such services in four years’ time.
