MediaTek is speeding up the process to develop its own budget-friendly octa-core chip to compete with Samsung.
According to a roadmap from the firm, which was uncovered by Sina Weibo, MediaTek is developing its own octa-core chip, which it hopes will be ready to release by the end of the year.
Although Samsung does have a octa-core device, only four work at one time, but MediaTek claims its processor will use all eight at the same time.
Although the chips should be produced by the end of this year, it is likely devices containing the octa-core processor won't arrive until early 2014.
Benchmarks have indicated in the past that the MediaTek processor won't be as fast as Qualcomm's chip, but it will come in at a significantly lower price. It is also thought that the company may be working on a quad-core version too.
