The nomination, by Sustainia, reflects the fact that reusing secondhand handsets can have a significant impact in markets around the world.
The Sustainia Award, chaired by actor and former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, selects the best brands which demonstrate their capabilities to introduce ideas that could transform businesses, cities and industries in daily life.
Founded in 2006, Mazuma Mobile, has been shortlisted for its business model which gives customers the option to get money in return for their old handsets. From its birth, the company has recycled more than 4.8 million phones which, not only gives customers more choice when selecting the latest smartphone, but has also helped prevent the harmful technology waste by offering an environmentally-safe option.
Mazuma Mobile's entry has been presented to the UN business conference in New York and the winner will be announced at a ceremony in Copenhagen on November 7th 2013.
